Driveway Paving That Stays Where You Laid It

A driveway carries a car every day of its life. Most of the ones we are called out to fix failed because of what went under the brick.

What Makes a Brick Paving Driveway Last Is Under the Bricks

Anyone can lay a brick. The reason one driveway is still dead flat after years and the one next door has a rut down the middle is the work nobody sees: excavation to firm material, a base compacted in layers, edge restraints holding the outer rows, and joint sand vibrated right in.

Clay, Concrete Bevel or Cobble: Which Pavers Suit a Driveway?

A paver that suits a pool can be the wrong call under a bakkie.

Clay pavers

Fired clay holds its colour, because the colour is the material rather than a pigment mixed into it. Warm reds and plums.

Concrete bevel pavers

The default driveway paver here. The bevelled top edge keeps the joints crisp as the surface wears, and it is easy to match years later.

Cobble pavers

Small tumbled units with a rough face. They follow a curve or an uneven driveway more forgivingly than a large paver.

Grass pavers (permeable)

An open-cell paver planted with grass: load runs through the concrete web, rain through the grass. For overflow bays, or estates that limit hard surface.

Pictured: grass blocks on an Irene driveway, before planting.

We lay a 50 mm paver as the minimum on any driveway. Our bricks come from MVA Bricks, Infraset, Tuscan Stone, Technicrete and Corobrik — see paving bricks and concrete paving.

Paving Patterns for Driveways: Why Herringbone Wins

Pattern is not only a look. It changes how the bricks share a wheel load.

Urban large flagstones packed in a herringbone pattern across a residential driveway in Irene, Centurion
HerringboneEach brick is locked by its neighbours at two angles, so a wheel load is shared rather than carried alone. The pattern SANS 1200 MJ specifies for vehicle traffic, and the one we lay most. Either 45° or 90° works — the choice is a look, not a strength.

Stretcher bondCleaner and quicker to lay. Good on a straight, gently used driveway. Less interlock, so weaker where cars turn on the spot.

Driveway Drainage, Falls and Paving Edges

Water is what kills driveways in Pretoria. Not the rain on the bricks, but the water that gets under them and washes the bedding out.

So every driveway is laid to a deliberate slope, away from the house and towards the street or a garden bed. The perimeter is the other weak point: a kerb holds the outer bricks so the interlock stays tight, and keeps soil out of the joints. Where the driveway is steep or the garage is the low point, falls alone are not enough. We install channel drains and grids where the site needs them — usually across the garage entrance, to catch water running down the slope before it reaches the door.

Brick Paving Compared With the Alternatives

We only install brick paving, so read this as an argument rather than a neutral survey. Note that segmented pavers — the industry term for concrete paving units — are a different thing from a poured slab, and we do lay those — see concrete paving.

Driveway Paving Questions, Answered

How much does driveway paving cost?

It depends on the size of the area, the brick you choose and how much excavation the ground needs. We measure on site at no charge and quote in writing.

What is the cheapest way to pave a driveway?

The cheapest driveway to install and the cheapest to own are rarely the same one: savings on a low quote come out of the base you cannot see. The honest levers are a smaller area, a standard paver and a simpler pattern.

What are the best pavers for a driveway?

For most homes here, a concrete bevel paver — the bevel keeps the joints crisp as the surface wears, and it is easy to match later. Clay holds its colour better; cobbles suit curves.

Can a sunken or damaged brick driveway be repaired?

Yes. A sunken area is lifted, the base underneath corrected and compacted, and the original bricks relaid, so the repair does not show. See paving restoration and repairs.

How do you stop water running into my garage?

By setting the levels before anything is laid. The surface is built to fall away from the house, towards the street or a garden bed.

Do you pave driveways in my area?
