Claremont — wet-cast pavers, coping run in the same product as the field.

What Paving Around a Swimming Pool Has to Deal With

Swimming pool paving is not a driveway with a different brick in it. It is wet every day of summer, so a textured finish usually suits the wet areas better than a smooth or polished one — but the finish is your choice and we will show you the options. Levels are set so water runs away from the pool.

It is also walked on barefoot, which is where the laying itself shows. A lip you would not notice in shoes is the one people find with a wet bare foot.

Pool Paving Bricks and Stones We Choose

These are the units we put near water, drawn from twelve pool surrounds we have built — our recommendation, not a manufacturer's specification. Samples can be arranged on request.

Cottage pavers

Small square units in warm tan. They follow a curve with almost no cutting.

Granite pavers

Grey, mottled light to dark, in a stretcher bond. The plainest surface we lay near water.

Bevel pavers in brown

A warm brown rectangular unit, the only red-brown surround in our portfolio.

Wet-cast concrete is the other range we quote from often — Claremont and Montana Park above are both wet-cast. We install clay pavers too.

Our units come from MVA Bricks, Infraset, Tuscan Stone, Technicrete and Corobrik — sizes and colours on our paving bricks and concrete paving pages.

Pool Coping Pavers: Edges and Curves

Coping is the run of units that finishes the pool edge — the lip you put your hands on getting out. It is set out first and the field paving is cut to it. A curve is where coping shows: straight units can be tapered around the radius, or curved Bullnose 600R and 900R units can follow it directly. Coping is bedded on mortar rather than on bedding sand. We lay paver and brick coping, not tile coping.

Pool Paving Questions, Answered

How much does pool paving cost?

It depends on the size of the surround, the unit you choose, and how much levelling the ground needs. We measure free and quote in writing.

What are the best pavers for a pool area?

A textured unit rather than a smooth or polished one, in a size that suits the shape of your pool.

Is pool paving slippery when wet?

Texture decides it, which is why we choose textured finishes for the wet areas rather than smooth or polished ones. Drainage is the other half.

Do I need coping, or can the paving run to the edge?

You can run field paving to the edge. But coping gives a rounded lip to climb out over, and makes a curved pool look deliberate.

What stops water running back into the pool?

The falls. If the surround falls back toward the water, splash-out and rain carry sand and grit into the skimmer. We set it to shed away from the coping.

Can you re-pave around an existing pool?

Yes. Most of our pool work is around an existing pool, which can usually stay full while we work. If yours is faded or sunken, see paving restoration and repairs.
